Quetzaltenango (Xela)
Quetzaltenango is commonly referred to as Xela ( shay – la ), which is the shortened version of the original Quiche Maya name , Xelaju'. Xela may well be the perfect Guatemala town, not too big, not too small, and enough foreigners to support a wide range of hotels, cafes, bars & restaurants, but not so many that Xela loses its traditions & culture. Xela attracts a more serious type of traveler who wants to learn Spanish and then stay around and get involved in a myriad of volunteer projects. Xela also functions as a base for a wide variety of spectacular hikes through the surrounding mountainous region. (from Lonely Planet)
Xela itself is a beautiful city located high up in the Sierra Madre mountains at an elevation of 2335 meters (7,660 ft.). Quetzaltenango is surrounded by mountains, volcanoes and spectactular countryside panoramic views. The city of Xela has great character with its narrow cobblestone streets built for walking and filled with colorful markets of fresh agricultural produce & regional Mayan crafts and garmets
