Celas
Maya can assist students in contacting
organizations and setting up interviews
with
the following requirements:
· The student has studied
for at least one week at
Celas Maya
· The student
has an intermediate level of Spanish
or higher
· The student commits to
a minimum commitment
of four weeks
There is a strong preference for students
with particular skills
or in areas of profession such as health
care, child care, English
as a second language, and agriculture.

Perhaps your time in Xela is short, or
you feel that you do not have any particular
skills to give to an organization. There
are many other ways in which to
participate in our community. We have
been working many years with foreign
guests and understand their desire to
help in some way as they become awakened
to the many challenges here. For this
reason, Celas Maya offers weekly conferences
as well as discussions and excursions
to social projects in and around Xela.
Through this introduction to projects
and organizations, students will be able
to see
how they can appropriately and responsibly
assist with time, money or other support.
Our teachers and staff are all committed
to working at a successful and socially
responsible organization. Throughout each
week we will announce benefits and
other activities happening around Xela
in which students may have an interest
in participating. We also keep a bulletin
board with volunteer work, benefits,
other requests for assistance, and information
on how to stay involved in
Guatemalan issues even after you have
returned home. And please don't forget
that just by attending Celas Maya you
are directly supporting our scholarship
program for rural Maya youth.
Celas Maya works with many organizations
in Quetzaltenango and
throughout the region dedicated to activities
that improve the lives of Guatemalans.

EntreMundos
EntreMundos is an organization in Quetzaltenango
that publicizes volunteer projects and
provides a database of available opportunities.
Check out their website at www.entremundos.org,
where you may also wish to begin making
your own contacts within the volunteer
communities of Xela.

Celas Maya is a major donor to a free
health clinic called Primeros Pasos, located
just outside Quetzaltenango. This clinic
provides free health care and regular
checkups for children in rural villages.
Many students of Celas Maya with an interest
in medicine have taken the opportunity
to volunteer with the clinic. To find
out more about the clinic, go to Primeros
Pasos Website.
Celas Maya has also supported IDEI (Institute
of Whole Education for Health and Development)
in its work with a girls’ organization,
Luz y Vida, that advocates children’s
rights and the participation of young
people in the Guatemalan political process.

student who worked with IDEI, David Massey,
