Spanish for the consultation room
Our Medical Spanish classes connect you one-on-one with certified Guatemalan teachers who build every lesson around the conversations you have with patients.
You do not need to be fluent to start. We place you by level and build medical vocabulary on top of the grammar you need, so you practice real consultations from the first week.

Why study Medical Spanish with Celas Maya?
We have taught Spanish in Xela since 1999 and have been accredited by the Instituto Cervantes since 2011. Xela is Guatemala’s second city and a regional health hub for the western highlands, and few tourists study here, so Spanish is the language of daily life, inside and outside the clinic.
Most students stay with a host family near the school, and the Program can be documented for university credit. Our quality is verified by the Instituto Cervantes.
— Inside the classroom
Clinical scenarios you will practice
Each scenario goes into your notes with its key phrases, so by the end of the course you have your own bedside phrasebook.

Hear how Spanish is used in real care
In the Medical Spanish Program you observe care in Guatemala’s public health system. Every placement follows three stages: a readiness interview, a mid-program review and a final assessment with you and the host health center.
Observation, not hands-on practice. You observe, listen and, when appropriate, talk with patients under supervision; you do not diagnose or treat patients. Transportation to the observation site is not included.
— A typical week
Classes in the morning, practice all day
Classes start every Monday, with morning (8 am – 1 pm) or afternoon (2 – 7 pm) schedules. The exact rhythm depends on the health center’s shifts, which we confirm before you arrive.
