I spent 6 weeks at Celas Maya and can say it was everything I had both wanted and hoped for prior to arriving. The teaching and lesson style is structured yet welcoming and fun with clear aims throughout the week. Each teacher I had experience with, Wendy and Byron, have years of experience and can easily judge your level and plan accordingly as well as introducing new grammar through topics and conversations or interest. Additionally, the homestay with Monica and her family was perfect for immersion, a warm home and inviting family who have years of experience with students provides an environment to only speak Spanish and not drop back into English which is so important for progressing. All other staff members from the administration, the other teachers and cleaning staff create an environment for learning and will do anything to help you along the way. My time in Xela and at Celas Maya has probably been the highlight of my trip through Central America thus far and I would love to revisit one day and spend more time day. Celas Maya was better than anything I expected. The 1:1 lessons were fantastic - it felt like a conversation with a little bit of grammar practice involved, and it was so fun and interesting that I never noticed the time passing. I worked with Tanía and I learned so much from and with her throughout the week. All of the teachers and fellow students at the school were fantastic and created a truly welcoming, family-like atmosphere. The afternoon outings were the cherry on top, shoutout to Joel for organizing all of those. I can't wait to come back. Celas Maya fue increíble. Las clases individuales fueron fantásticas - parece una conversación que incluye un poco de práctica gramatical, y eran tan divertidas y interesantes que no notaba cómo pasaba el tiempo. Trabajé con Tanía y aprendí muchísimo de y con ella a lo largo de la semana. Todos los profesores y compañeros de la escuela fueron fantásticos y crearon un ambiente verdaderamente acogedor y familiar. Las salidas por la tarde fueron la guinda del pastel (no sé si esta idioma significa lo mismo en español); un agradecimiento especial a Joel por organizar todas. My two weeks studying Spanish at Celas Maya were truly magical.  Not only did I improve my Spanish skills and gain confidence in communicating , but I also learned so much about Guatemalan life and culture.  The teachers at the school are all so professional and friendly.  My home stay family was warm and inviting, and the home-cooked meals were delicious. Celas Maya was an amazing experience. My one on one Spanish classes with Tania were so helpful to start cleaning up my Spanish. She was so patient with me and targeted my exact individual language needs.  I hope to contact them in the near future to continue my learning with online classes. The tour we went on to the natural hot springs was so amazing as well. It was fun to see the natural landscape around the beautiful pools. Celas Mayas is a great opportunity when in Guatemala! It was really easy connecting with teachers and other students throughout the time spent at the language school, as there were many activities to participate in and friendly faculty for support. The Spanish immersion and homestay visits were especially benefiting for individuals learning the language. The Celas Maya approach is excellent for developing conversational skills. I started a number of years ago with intensive one on one in person classes for a week in Xela. When I returned home, I started online classes on a weekly basis. I can now converse with native Spanish speakers in the States and in Latin America.  My weekly conversations with my maestro allow me to develop vocabulary and grammar using topics of interest to me. After a few years of Celas Maya training, I have come to think of my maestro not so much as a teacher, but as mi amigo. This is likely the best school in Xela, and I say that after having been to other schools here. The level of instruction is superb, the activities are well-planned and fun (ranging from cooking classes to volcano hikes), and the overall environment between the school and students is awesome and it felt like I was leaving a family by the end. If you want to take your Spanish seriously while you are in Xela and you want to make meaningful connections with people, this is the school.
