— About the exam

What is the DELE exam?

The DELE (Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera) are the official diplomas that certify your level of competence and mastery of Spanish. They are awarded by the Instituto Cervantes on behalf of Spain’s Ministry of Education, and they are recognized internationally by universities, employers and government institutions.

The exams follow the descriptors of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), and their contents come from the Instituto Cervantes Curriculum Plan and the Reference Levels for Spanish. The Instituto Cervantes manages the academic, administrative and economic side of the diplomas under Royal Decrees 1137/2002, 264/2008 and 1004/2015.

Why a DELE diploma is worth it

  • Permanent: the diploma never expires
  • Recognized worldwide by universities, employers and governments
  • Proof that you can communicate in Spanish at a certified level
  • Accepted for Spanish nationality applications (A2 or higher)
  • Useful for university admission, residency and work
