Celas Maya is an official DELE exam center in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, accredited by Instituto Cervantes. What is the DELE Exam?

Dele (Diploma De Español como Lengua Extranjera) is the exam for the official Spanish certificate affiliated with Instituto Cervantes and also in the representation of the Spanish Ministry of education and sports. It is now also recognized by the French Ministry of education.

When are the DELE Exams?

November 14th 2026 Exams:
Adults: Levels A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2
Deadline: Sept 30th 2026

Exams start at 9:00am and end around 4:00pm. There will be a lunch break.

How do I enroll?

You will need to submit your DELE Application along with a copy of your passport to the office of Celas Maya Language School and complete payment in full for the exam. This can be done in-person or online.

Can I take the DELE exam online?

Yes, you can register, prepare, and give the DELE exam online, so nothing is stopping you from learning Spanish.

The teaching and lesson style is structured yet welcoming and fun with clear aims throughout the week. Each teacher I had experience with, Wendy and Byron, have years of experience and can easily judge your level and plan accordingly as well as introducing new grammar through topics and conversations or interest.

Additionally, the homestay with Monica and her family was perfect for immersion, a warm home and inviting family who have years of experience with students provides an environment to only speak Spanish and not drop back into English which is so important for progressing.

All other staff members from the administration, the other teachers and cleaning staff create an environment for learning and will do anything to help you along the way.

My time in Xela and at Celas Maya has probably been the highlight of my trip through Central America thus far and I would love to revisit one day and spend more time day.

Celas Maya was better than anything I expected. The 1:1 lessons were fantastic - it felt like a conversation with a little bit of grammar practice involved, and it was so fun and interesting that I never noticed the time passing. I worked with Tanía and I learned so much from and with her throughout the week. All of the teachers and fellow students at the school were fantastic and created a truly welcoming, family-like atmosphere. The afternoon outings were the cherry on top, shoutout to Joel for organizing all of those. I can't wait to come back.

My two weeks studying Spanish at Celas Maya were truly magical.  Not only did I improve my Spanish skills and gain confidence in communicating , but I also learned so much about Guatemalan life and culture.  The teachers at the school are all so professional and friendly.  My home stay family was warm and inviting, and the home-cooked meals were delicious. Celas Maya was an amazing experience. My one on one Spanish classes with Tania were so helpful to start cleaning up my Spanish. She was so patient with me and targeted my exact individual language needs.  I hope to contact them in the near future to continue my learning with online classes.

I started a number of years ago with intensive one on one in person classes for a week in Xela. When I returned home, I started online classes on a weekly basis. I can now converse with native Spanish speakers in the States and in Latin America.  My weekly conversations with my maestro allow me to develop vocabulary and grammar using topics of interest to me. After a few years of Celas Maya training, I have come to think of my maestro not so much as a teacher, but as mi amigo. The level of instruction is superb, the activities are well-planned and fun (ranging from cooking classes to volcano hikes), and the overall environment between the school and students is awesome and it felt like I was leaving a family by the end. If you want to take your Spanish seriously while you are in Xela and you want to make meaningful connections with people, this is the school.

Nature of the Exams
The DELE Spanish diplomas are official degrees accrediting the degree of competence and mastery of the Spanish language, awarded by the Instituto Cervantes in representation of the Spanish Ministry of Education and Sports. They are now also recognized by the French Ministry of Education.

The economic, administrative and academic management of the Diplomas of Spanish as a Foreign Language are carried out by the Instituto Cervantes, as stated in Royal Decrees 1137/2002 of October 31, RD 264/2008 of February 22 and RD 1004 / 2015 of November 6. These reviews follow the guidelines of the Common European Framework of Reference and the manual for linking examinations to the CEFR, works created by the Council of Europe.

The DELE exams respond to descriptors of the CEFR and the contents are included in the Curriculum Plan of the Instituto Cervantes as well as the Reference Levels for Spanish.

Celas Maya Language School’s DELE Tribunals are officially recognized and accredited by the Instituto Cervantes, holding a designated accreditation code. Our professors, certified by the University of San Carlos of Guatemala, undergo continuous training through the Instituto Cervantes, INGUAT, and Celas Maya. They bring extensive experience in teaching Spanish as a foreign language. Celas Maya offers DELE Tribunals for all levels, which are proposed by us, endorsed, and approved by the Instituto Cervantes.
